"It had been hours since I ran at track practice that winter, but I hadn't bothered to shower, let alone change clothes. No, I didn't have time for that, because I had found the answer to my prayers.

"This has to be it.

"Eat all the fruit you want.

"Never get fat.

"Raw. Food. Diet."

Rachael Steil clocked in as an All-American collegiate runner; she became a girl clawing for a comeback on a 30-bananas-a-day diet. This year-long struggle with raw food ended when she realized she had to find her self-respect beyond her identity as a successful runner on a perfect diet.

Running in Silence opens the door on the secret world of eating disorders. It provides vital insights for those who don't suffer from this disease and an honest and harrowing personal story for those who do. Steil challenges the stigma of eating disorders, looks past appearance, and dives into the heart of obsession.

Running in Silence My Drive for Perfection and the Eating Disorder That Fed It (Audible Audio Edition) Rachael Rose Steil Books

Rachael Steil's transparency creates an astounding story in "Running in Silence." She allows readers deep access into her very private thoughts, with truthful and accurate depictions.
As a Division I runner, I relate to Steil's story from a similar perspective--an athlete striving desperately to cling on to the harmful success of the past. Much of what Steil writes about I experience and struggle with daily. I constantly feel trapped in my own body, and disgusted with all of its folds, flabs, and imperfections. The joy that I used to derive from life's beautiful moments now seems to be sourced solely from food. I have strained relationships and significantly altered my persona to revolve around food.
Thank you Rachael, for sharing your story, and reminding me that I am not alone in this journey. Praise for "Running in Silence," and the voice that I gained through Rachael Steil's courage in sharing her story!

Running in Silence My Drive for Perfection and the Eating Disorder That Fed It (Audible Audio Edition) Rachael Rose Steil Books Reviews

This book describes the struggle with an eating disorder perfectly. I was shaking my head in agreement throughout. I think everyone with an eating disorder, who struggles with disordered eating, or who knows someone who struggles should read this.
This book is a must-read for anyone immersed in the community of distance running. Rachael articulates messy, complicated feelings very well, and reading about her experiences helped me better understand many of my own. Her courageous and vulnerable writing makes the reader feel as if they are having an honest conversation with a friend. As a runner recovering from an ED and a recent addition to a high school XC coaching staff, Rachael has become a huge inspiration to me in modeling how we can be stronger than our struggles and serve others with our gifts and talents. "Running in Silence" will forever hold a special place on my bookshelf and be passed along to many friends for years to come!
I adore this book. As someone who has suffered from weight issues throughout my life, I can totally relate. I actually...ironically was Paleo when I used to watch Freelee (I could never stand Durianrider)...now I'm an ovo-vegetarian and super happy and healthy. I felt Rachael's struggle with her strive to be faster and her weight issues. I'm SO SO HAPPY she's doing well and finally is able to love herself and is trying to help others.
This is a must-read for any athlete who has struggled with disordered eating! I am so grateful for Rachael's bravery in sharing ALL aspects of her eating disorder - everyone is familiar with the issue of anorexia in running, but so few people talk about the binge-eating that almost always plagues these same runners sooner or later.

Another aspect that sets this book apart from other eating disorder memoirs is the self-help advice at the end of each chapter. Rachael's story was so similar to mine that I found myself feeling triggered at times into old habits, feelings, and thought-patterns...however, once I reached the end of each chapter, the self-help portion returned my mind to a healthy place and inspired me to continue pursuing recovery. THANK YOU RACHAEL!!!!
I just finished your book and absolutely loved it! I can't tell you how closely it resembles my own personal journey I have been on. You put it I words I would never be able to and explain the thoughts and feelings I've never been able to express to my family and friends. I am passing the book along first to my mother and then a few friends who have been trying to understand my own struggle as you've explained it in such detail. Absolutely amazing story thank you so much for sharing and again coming from someone who had just started the recovery process I cannot thank you enough for your strength in putting your personal story out there to share it helps more then you'll ever know! 💜 This book is is perfect for anyone suffering, in recovery, those helping a friend or family member through recovery or anyone just trying to understand the disease a little more! Amazing read amazing strength and you Rachel are an amazing author!
I started the book Saturday and finished it Sunday night. I seriously could not put it down. When I started reading “Running in Silence,” I was stunned by the stark honesty of Steil’s words and her bravery in sharing this story.

Steil’s work is unique from other eating disorder books. Her goal to lose weight was not about looks or beauty but about athletic performance. She never ended up in the hospital on life support because she had dramatically wasted away to nothingness, but she shows you how serious the problem is in spite of the fact that it might not seem “that bad” to some.

The book is her own authentic story unencumbered by statistics, medical terms, and psychology. Yet it has won the attention and endorsement of serious athletes, writers, and medical, psychological, and nutritional professionals.

Steil writes in a way that makes you feel like you are right there in her head with her as she describes what being immersed in an eating disorder feels like – the obsessiveness, the depression, the fear, the frustration, the vast amounts of time and energy she poured into her research about absolutely any kind of food “secret,” and how her relationship with food affected her relationships running, with education, and with all the people around her.

The personal insight she explores in every single chapter of the book helps the reader interpret the wisdom she shares in a manner that invites rather than intimidates. The maturity of this young writer (25) will wow you. You do not have to be an eating-disordered person or an athlete to appreciate the journey and the lessons in this book.
Running in Silence was a great book to see just how powerful of a role the mind plays in the midst of an eating disorder. Rachael gives you a raw, real, and honest look into her own mind during the disorder and all the tricks it played on her during journey through diet after diet. It's a great book to read if you've had an ED, currently have an ED, if you're a coach, or if you have interest in learning more about the psychological component of ED's. The story line keeps the reader engaged the whole time and it's an easy read.
